Week 13

Forming and Casting.

Overview

This week focused on molding and casting. We explored several methods for creating molds and pouring materials.

3D Printed Form

First, I printed a 3D heart model to use as the form for casting.

Mixing and Pouring

I chose Dragon Skin 10, which is skin-safe, strong, and flexible. I mixed parts A and B by weight in a 1:1 ratio. I had 8 minutes of workable time before the silicone began to set, then waited 75 minutes for it to fully cure.

The cast came out clean and intact:

A closer look shows tiny bubbles trapped during mixing.

Vacuum Forming

The next day, I could use the Mayku FormBox vacuum former. I prepared my models according to the machine’s forming guidelines.

Here’s the FormBox in action:

The result was mostly successful, despite a few visible flaws likely caused by the improper positioning or the forming process. Unfortunately, repeating the process wasn’t an option made available to me.
